Global Agenda Council on China 2014-2016

After impressive economic growth, China is now the world’s second-largest economy, the largest trading nation and home to some of the fastest-growing companies. The Chinese government plans to transform the country into a world leader in science and technology by 2050.

However, many question whether China can successfully shift from being a leading low-cost manufacturer to a value-added innovator creating cutting-edge products and services. Some signs seem promising. China has record levels of R&D spending, soaring number of corporate patents, a new generation of entrepreneurial business leaders and a high number of engineering and science graduates. But there are challenges. China’s legal system and lack of intellectual property rights enforcement, emphasis on rote learning in schools, forced technology transfer policies and top- down innovation model may prevent it from achieving its full potential.

The Global Agenda Council on China will bring together leaders from government, academia and business for a constructive dialogue on how to transform China into an innovation powerhouse. Together with these stakeholders, the council will explore what needs to be done to scale up innovation and tackle the challenges outlined above. The council will put in place a channel for sharing the outcomes of these discussions with Chinese government officials, business leaders and the public at large.

The council will also serve as an advisory board for Forum projects and meetings related to China, particularly the Annual Meeting of the New Champions, which takes place in China every September and focuses on the theme of innovation.
