Global Agenda Council on Conflict Prevention 2011

The complexity of contemporary conflicts calls for engagement of the business community. A major element of strategic peace building is a strong and equitable economic foundation, to which companies can be major contributors. Given the rising demand for natural resources, businesses find themselves increasingly involved in fragile contexts, with particular risks and associated costs. There is a convergence of interests of peace builders and private companies. Stability and good governance create a positive business climate and business, conducted in a principled manner, contributes to prosperity and avoids relapse into conflict.

Research and experience illustrates what the business community can bring to the equation, guidelines have been elaborated, companies’ responsibilities have evolved and international norms have been developed. However, there is a need to reframe the debate in an inclusive, non-partisan and authoritative manner, as well as to put this issue on the agenda of global opinion-makers.
