Global Agenda Council on Nuclear, Biological & Chemical Weapons 2011
The signing of a US-Russian New Strategic Arms Reduction Treaty (START) and Washington’s Nuclear Security Summit in the spring of 2010 hailed the return of popular interest and political support for dealing with weapons of mass destruction (WMD) – a topic that had lost some of its glow since the 2003 Iraq crisis. Meanwhile, intensified sub-national activity and illicit trade of weapons-grade materials increases the risk of non-conventional attacks using nuclear, chemical or biological agents. A complex web of technical and diplomatic relations, as well as increased public-private cooperation, are called for to meet the challenge of containing high impact nuclear, chemical, biological and radiological weapons.
This Council aims to find innovative solutions to address these layered technicalities and mitigate the risks posed by such weapons.
