Global Agenda Council on South-East Asia 2011

Since its establishment, ASEAN has been a meeting platform for its leaders to discuss the acceleration of economic growth, social progress and cultural development. Currently it aims to achieve an ASEAN Economic Community by 2015. A unified area would mean a market of 580 million people and a GDP of over US$ 1,500 billion. Yet many inside the region are sceptical about the idea of ASEAN as a rising and united bloc, citing political, cultural and economic disparities and the lack of a common regional identity.

This Council aims to provide a fresh view of a unified ASEAN as the region’s motor for economic growth. It means to analyse the challenges to be faced and present proposals on how to best leverage the institution to ensure prosperity for the region’s people.
