Global Agenda Council on the United States 2011

The US has undergone a major transition in government since 2008 and felt the effects of the global economic downturn. To help stabilize financial markets and provide fiscal stimulus, Congress established and contributed US$ 700 billion to the Troubles Asset Relief Program and added an additional US$ 787 billion to the fiscal stimulus package.

President Obama’s health insurance reform bill will extend coverage to an additional 32 million Americans by 2016. Healthcare implementation aside, the White House and Congress are occupied with the confirmation of a Supreme Court Justice, immigration reform and possible energy and climate change legislation.

This Council aims to consider US responses to contemporary challenges, examining policy decisions and leadership. Explanations and analysis will be offered on how the US views its current and future role on the global stage.
