Worked for six years in child health and nutrition programmes in South Asia, East Africa and Iraq; taught for six years at the London and Liverpool Schools of Tropical Medicine. 1990, Chief Health and Population Adviser, Overseas Development Administration (ODA), UK; 1997, Director for Human Development, Department for International Development (DFID), UK. 1999, Head, Roll Back Malaria, World Health Organization (WHO); also served for two years as Director, office of the Director-General, WHO. 2003, with the Department for Health Action in Crises, WHO; September 2005, joined the office of the UN Secretary-General as Senior Coordinator for Avian and Pandemic Influenza; concurrently, January 2009, Coordinator, UN system's High Level Task Force on Global Food Security; since 2009, Special Representative for Food Security and Nutrition; since December 2011, Coordinator, Scale Up Nutrition (SUN), heading the new SUN Movement Secretariat.
