Former primary school teacher. 1975, first elected to the Dáil (Irish House of Representatives), in a by-election in the Mayo constituency. Has been re-elected to the Dáil at the 11 General Elections since. 1986-87, Minister of State (Education and Labour).1994-97, Cabinet Minister (Tourism and Trade). 2002, became Fine Gael Leader and immediately embarked on a campaign to revitalize the Party. March 2011, elected Taoiseach (Prime Minister). Vice-President, Fine Gael's European affiliate, the European People's Party. Chaired the European Union Council of Trade Ministers during Ireland's Presidency. 1996, co-chaired the successful Singapore round of the World Trade Organization talks. Headed the EU Council of Trade Ministers during Ireland's Presidency of the European Union. Interests: hill walking, playing golf and cycling.
