Espen Barth Eide

Espen Barth Eide is Managing Director and Member of the Managing Board at the World Economic Forum in Geneva, where he is Head of Geopolitical Affairs. He is also an Under-Secretary General of the United Nations and the Secretary-General’s Special Adviser on Cyprus, chairing the recently restarted negotiations aiming at reunifying the country. Mr. Eide is a member of the Boards of the Centre for Humanitarian Dialogue in Geneva and the Norwegian Institute of International Affairs in Oslo, as well as a Senior Adviser to the Centre for Strategic and International Affairs (CSIS) in Washington. He served for 10 years in the Norwegian Government, most recently as Foreign Minister (until October 2013), but has also served as Defence Minister and, before becoming a Cabinet Minister, as Deputy Minister of both Foreign Affairs and Defence in two governments, both under (former) Prime Minister Jens Stoltenberg (2000-2001 and 2005-2013). Educated as a Political Scientist, he was from 1993 to 2000 and 2002-2005 a senior researcher and research director of the Norwegian Institute of International Affairs in Oslo, where his primary focus was international security, conflict resolution and peacekeeping. He has published and taught widely on these issues. Mr. Eide has had various UN assignments over the years and been working closely with a number of international organizations.
