Former Secretary to the Department of Security. 1974, took part in negotiations leading to Accords de Lusaka. 1974, Prime Minister of transition government. 1975-86, Minister of Foreign Affairs. 1977, Member, Central Committee, Parti Frelimo; Deputy of Popular Assembly and Permanent Commission; 1986, 1989 and 1991, elected President, Parti Frelimo; 1986-2004, President of Mozambique: Non-Executive Director, African Rainbow Minerals: since 2006, Independent Non-Executive Director, African Rainbow Minerals (ARM), South Africa. Non-Executive Director, Harmony. Recipient of awards: Chatham House Prize (2006); inaugural Mo Ibrahim Prize for Achievement in African Leadership (2007).
