Formerly: youth worker, Indian National Congress; elected to Parliament 1980, 1985, 1989, 1991, 1998, 1999, 2004 and 2009, from Chhindwara Constituency. Minister of Textiles; Minister of Environment and Forests; 2004-09, Minister of Commerce and Industry, instrumental in initiating bilateral trade initiatives; active in WTO negotiation and policy initiatives on FDI and intellectual property. May 2009-Jan 2011, as Minister of Road Transport & Highways fast-tracked the development of National Highways; Jan 2011, Minister of Urban Development; since October 2012, also responsible for Parliamentary Affairs. President of the Board of Governors, Institute of Management Technology, Ghaziabad, Nagpur, Hyderabad and Dubai. Honorary Doctorate, Rani Durgavati University, Jabalpur. Interests: sports.
