Formerly: youth worker, Indian National Congress; elected to Parliament 1980, 1985, 1989, 1991, 1998, 1999, 2004 and 2009, from Chhindwara Constituency. Minister of Textiles; Minister of Environment and Forests; 2004-09, Minister of Commerce and Industry, instrumental in initiating bilateral trade initiatives; active in WTO negotiation and policy initiatives on FDI and intellectual property. May 2009-Jan. 2011, as Minister of Road Transport & Highways, fast-tracked the development of National Highways; since Jan. 2011, Minister of Urban Development and, since Oct. 2012, also Minister of Parliamentary Affairs. President of the Board of Governors, Institute of Management Technology, Ghaziabad, Nagpur, Hyderabad and Dubai. Honorary Doctorate, Rani Durgavati University, Jabalpur. Interests: sports.
