Global University Leaders Forum (GULF)

In 2006, the World Economic Forum initiated a community of leading university presidents, the Global University Leaders Forum (GULF). In doing so, the Forum pursued three main objectives:
Develop a global community of university leaders
Foster collaborations among top universities in areas of significance for global policy
Shape the agenda of the World Economic Forum

The GULF community now includes 23 heads of universities from 9 different countries, currently representing the premier university leaders forum in the world. The GULF membership criteria reflect ranking, strategic importance of the university for the World Economic Forum, geographical distribution and personality, and contribution of the leader of the university to the community. In particular, the World Economic Forum and the GULF recognize the unique benefit of a geographically broad spectrum of contributors; hence, there is a need to include universities from different regions of the world. Due diligence on potential members from unrepresented regions of the world is in the pipeline in conjunction with the regional activities of the World Economic Forum.

The GULF, meeting once a year in conjunction with the World Economic Forum Annual Meeting, is a unique opportunity for its members to network and learn from other university leaders and the Davos community at large. It is an ideal platform to look at the globalization of the university and the current and future role of teaching and research in addressing issues of global importance.

The collaboration between GULF members and the World Economic Forum has helped to endorse strategic projects such as the Global Agenda Councils (GACs). The presidents of six universities were chairs of Global Agenda Councils in 2008, and numerous top faculty were involved in most of the Councils. These individuals represent a stable source of strategic advice on topics and scholarship to engage in Forum activities throughout the year. Moreover, GULF members, who are fully integrated into the broader Forum Community, are regular panellists in sessions at the Annual Meeting, Regional Meetings and Industry Activities of the Forum.
