Past Workshops

Davos 2007
E&C 2020 Strategic Issue Identification - Davos, January 25: The 2006 CEO Survey resulted in a cluster of highly uncertain and impactfull issues rather then the single issues identified in the previous years. This workshop focused on the E&C industry governors formalizing definitions of 10 critical issues, prioritizing them and setting the stage for E&C 2020 scenario development project and the related workshops that would occur throughout 2007. The governors ranked four issues as most critical: a) Promoting E&C industry careers to combat shortages in skilled labour; b) Providing solutions for meeting the increased demand for energy and transportation; c) Use of public-private partnerships as a means for mega-project development; d) Competition from emerging country E&C firms. The workshop was attended by 24 CEOs from the E&C Industry.

London
Issue Identification workshop - London, May 9: After a first phase of issue identification conducted through interviews and research, the workshop focused on: a) Prioritising the issues based on their level of uncertainty and their impact on the industry to identify the critical uncertainties, i.e. the issues that can shape the industry in different ways in the future; b) Identifying key questions for the scenarios. The workshop was attended by 24 participants both from the E&C industry, their clients, other stakeholders and experts.

Jordan
Issue Identification Workshop - Jordan, May 20: Based on its prior global issue identification workshop in London, the Scenario Planning Team has synthesised thinking on the key issues that could shape the future of the E&C industry from a global perspective. The scenario development workshop in Jordan aimed to share insight, to complement the scenarios on the global perspective, and, in particular, to develop the regional perspective on the future of the industry. The first discussion tested the critical uncertainties as identified in London in the Middle East context. Thereafter, specific issues that seemed to be either potentially wrongly evaluated or could be differently appreciated in the Middle East where presented and discussed. The workshop was attended by 8 participants from the E&C industry, their clients, other stakeholders and experts.

Singapore
Scenario Development Workshop - Singapore, June 23: This workshop brought together 8 stakeholders from the E&C industry. The aim of the meeting was to validate the scenario axes and develop conditions and triggers that would lead to contrasting but plausible outcomes. In this context, we presented the outcomes of the issue identification phase and the proposed axes: Will the E&C markets evolve towards a more open and global market, or to more local and regional markets? Will the mindset of the industry evolve to reflect a more reactive and competitive mindset, or will the industry become more proactive and collaborative?
The participants in the workshop discussed the relevance of the axes, the plausibility of the scenarios, and the conditions that would support the contrasting end states of the axes.

Paris
Scenario Development Workshop - Paris, July 13: This workshop brought together 14 stakeholders from the E&C industry, mainly Industry Partners and academia. The aim of the meeting was to validate the scenario axes and develop conditions and triggers that would lead to contrasting but plausible outcomes. In this context, we presented the outcomes of the issue identification phase and the proposed axes. The participants of the workshop discussed the relevance of these axes, the plausibility of the scenarios, and the conditions that would support the contrasting end states of the axes.

Dalian
Scenario Affirmation Workshop - Dalian, September 5: 19 stakeholders from the E&C industry joined in Dalian for a highly interactive and energizing scenario affirmation workshop. Prior to the meeting, the participants received scenario outlines to read in preparation for the workshop. The 4 scenarios were presented by representatives of the industry, followed by a discussion endorsing the new proposed scenario axes. To strengthen the scenarios by identifying the circumstances or events that would make them more challenging, to develop scenario specific content for major issues, and to identify areas to explore more in depth. The outcomes of the breakout discussions were reported back to the group by participants.

Davos 2008: objectives
Scenario Launch Workshop - Davos, January 24: The scenario building phase will be concluded by a workshop were the four resulting scenarios will be presented to some 25-30 CEOs from E&C companies. In addition to presenting the summarizing video and issueing the scenarios publication, the workshop will focus on peers discussing what the most desireable world would look like, and what actions can be taken today to ensure moving into that direction. In addition, we will be looking to define the least desireable world and what can we do to be prepared should that world come into existence, or how we could avoid turning that direction.
