Best Practice Guidelines

The Global Health Initiative (GHI) works in partnership with organizations such as the World Health Organization (
WHO), the International Labour Organization (ILO), the Joint United Nations Programme on HIV/AIDS (UNAIDS), Stop TB, Harvard University and Aid for AIDS (AfA) to develop and communicate corporate best practices in the areas of HIV/AIDS, tuberculosis and malaria. The documents below are part of the GHI's efforts to improve the quality as well as the quantity of the private sector's efforts to combat these diseases.

The Global Health Initiative (GHI) was launched by Kofi Annan at the Annual Meeting 2002 in Davos. The GHI’s mission is to engage businesses in public-private partnerships to tackle HIV/AIDS, TB, Malaria and Health Systems.

Protecting Your Workforce and Surrounding Communities from TuberculosisInnovative Toolkit to Prompt Chinese Companies' Action around the TB Threat
The Global Health Initiative of the World Economic Forum with support from the Lilly MDR-TB Partnership and inputs from the National Center for Tuberculosis Control and Prevention, Chinese Center for Disease Control (CDC) and key partners has developed a toolkit, "Protecting Your Workforce and Surrounding Communities from Tuberculosis: An Awareness Building Toolkit on a Comprehensive Approach to TB for Businesses in China". The objective of the toolkit is to help Chinese Companies plan and implement workplace and community-based TB prevention, care and control programmes. The toolkit launched on September 26, 2008 at the Annual Meeting of the New Champions in Tianjin encourages companies to adopt an integrated approach to manage TB and HIV co-infections in partnership with their employees, the government and other key stakeholders.

The Global Health Initiative is the world’s leading independent organisation Effectively Catalysing Public-Private Partnerships in health.

Currently, the GHI partners with companies, governments, international organisations and civil society to:

 Deliver innovative workplace programmes to tackle HIV/AIDS, TB and Malaria across Africa and South and Southeast Asia. Through these programmes, more than 9 million people have access to lif-saving information, prevention, testing and treatment services.
 Strengthen the health system in Sub-Saharan Africa.
 Support global and regional public-private partnerships.

Guidelines for building business coalitions against HIV/AIDS
This tool kit provides practical, operational, timely and relevant guidance to companies and/or leaders in the private sector who want to combine forces in the fight against HIV/AIDS. New guidance for joint workplace control of TB and HIV/AIDS
The Global Health Initiative, World Health Organisation, UNAIDS and the Global Partnership to Stop TB have developed the first guide for the joint management of HIV/AIDS and TB in the workplace.

Guidelines for workplace TB control activities (WHO / ILO / GHI 2003)

Malaria - a neglected threat to business
The Global Health Initiative produced the largest and most comprehensive report ever on the impact of malaria on business. The report found that 72% of Sub-Saharan African businesses are effected by malaria. In response, the GHI launched a set of guidelines to encourage and assist businesses in Africa to take a more proactive role in the fight against malaria by setting up workplace based schemes.

HIV/AIDS workplace reference menu (ILO / UNAIDS / GHI, 2002-2003)
The ILO, UNAIDS, and the GHI have developed Workplace Reference Menus for two affected regions: Asia-Pacific and Africa. These documents provide an overview for businesses looking to adopt of workplace policies and programmes. It also describes key principles from the ILO's Code of Practice and explains how these apply in a business setting.
