Shaping the future of the Engineering and Construction industry

Engineering & Construction (E&C) Industry

Engineering and Construction (E&C) Industry Partners are select member companies of the World Economic Forum that are actively involved in leading the Forum's mission at the industry level. Partnership brings visibility and insight to strategic decision-making on the most important industry and cross-industry related issues and the opportunity to engage in actions of global corporate citizenship. Industry Partners within the E&C community have privileged access to ideas, projects, and stakeholders that actively focus on the most relevant and critical industry issues and challenges.

E&C Industry Partner Workstreams

Workstreams

Adapting to Environmental Challenges

• Sustainable Buildings. As part of the SlimCity cross industry initiative the second phase of this workstream will focus on the distribution of the best examples captured in the Knowledge Cards for Sustainable Buildings on how to catalyse more Sustainable Buildings.  The workstream will also work with various NGO’s on establishing a common metrics system for Sustainable Buildings.
• Water Initiative and Catalyzing Public Private Partnerships (PPPs). The Forum's cross industry Water Initiative continues to sharpen global awareness of the water challenge and raise the political importance of water reform through global as well as regional multi-stakeholder dialogue platforms in the Middle East, Southern Africa and India. Further, we are working to find consensus on more robust ways for measuring and managing water activities and to scale up innovations in developing and financing "win-win" water infrastructure projects development.
• Climate Change.  Working towards COP15 in December, this cross-industry initiative has formed a business-led low carbon economy task force in partnership with the UK Government to make practical recommendations at a high level informal political level to the G20.
• Positive Infrastructure.  Multi-stakeholder dialogue that will deliver a report that highlights how fiscal stimulus for infrastructure projects can best be used to produce the short-term results of generating employment, and hence reversing GDP declines, without losing sight of long-term goals of improving economic competitiveness and providing positive infrastructure that is environmentally and socially desirable.

Multistakeholder Risk Management

• Regular multi-stakeholder WELCOM calls surrounding the current state of the Industry & Economy
• Annual joint meeting with the Forum’s Energy Industry community, with business and government leaders from 40 leading Energy companies and 15 Ministries of Energy.
• Annual joint meeting with the Forum’s Mining & Metals Industry community, with business and government leaders

E&C as a Global Citizen

• The Disaster Resource Network (DRN) is a public private partnership between E&C companies and the United Nations’ humanitarian agencies to coordinate pro-bono relief services with on the ground relief organizations when natural disasters occur. During 2009, efforts will focus on taking the DRN networks created in Mexico and India in order to create a global DRN network.
• The Partnering Against Corruption Initiative (PACI) is a global anti-corruption initiative driven by the private sector with the initial set of principles drafted by the Forum’s E&C industry in collaboration with Transparency International (TI) and Basel Institute of Global Governance. PACI helps companies develop and implement an internal program or benchmark its existing program, further improve and self-monitor anti-corruption programs and obtain external verification of the program.
• Energy Poverty Action (EPA) is a joint initiative of the World Business Council for Sustainable Development, the World Energy Council and the Forum that delivers business expertise and best practices to reduce energy poverty by developing innovative, scaleable and replicable energy projects.
