The first World Economic Forum on Europe and Central Asia, held in Istanbul from 30 October to 1 November 2008 with the theme Confronting Challenges in Defining a Collaborative Future, concluded on a note of cautious optimism. Although there was general acknowledgement that the financial crisis would have an impact on emerging markets, the enormous growth potential of the region was likely to soften the impact considerably.
