Lawyer, Advocate of the Supreme Court of Pakistan and Human Rights Activist; defends the rights of women, minorities, and children from religious extremism, honour killings, and blasphemy laws. 1998-2004, UN Special Rapporteur on Extrajudicial, Arbitrary and Summary Executions; 2004-10, United Nations Special Rapporteur on Freedom of Religion or Belief. From 2010, first ever female President of the Supreme Court Bar Association of Pakistan. Founding Member and current Chairperson, Human Rights Commission of Pakistan. Director, AGHS Legal Aid Cell. Instrumental in the formation of: 1980, Punjab Women Lawyers Association (PWLA); 1985, Women Action Forum (WAF). Author of publications and two books, Divine Sanction? The Hudood Ordinance (1988, 2003); Children of a Lesser God: Child Prisoners of Pakistan (1992). Recipient of numerous international awards, including: American Bar Association International Human Rights Award; Millennium Peace Prize (2001); UNESCO/Bilbao Prize for the Promotion of a Culture of Human Rights (2010).
