Assistant Secretary-General and Director for Political Affairs of the UN Secretary-General. 2007-12: Executive Director, United Nations Institute for Training and Research (UNITAR), Geneva and concurrently, UN System Staff College, Turin. Currently Executive Secretary, Economic Commission for Africa and UN Undersecretary-General. Has published extensively, including authoring or editing 22 books, mostly on Africa and development issues.
