Formerly: two years in India as a Medical Epidemiologist, WHO Smallpox Eradication Programme; 13 years as Medical Epidemiologist in sub-Saharan Africa on assignment from US Centers for Disease Control and Prevention. With WHO: Chief, Research Activities, Global Programme on AIDS; 1995-98, Director, Programme on Emerging and other Communicable Diseases; 1998-03, Executive Director, Communicable Diseases Cluster. Recipient of awards including, Heinz Award on Human Condition (2007).
