Specialist in computer science, computer network and communication. 1980s, research and development of operating systems and system software; 1984, developed Japan University UNIX Network; 1988, Founder, WIDE Project; 1990s, research and development of computer networks; since 2000s, advises on IT governance for national governments, including prime ministers and global IT policy communities. Recipient of awards: Okawa Publications Prize (1999); Jonathan B. Postel Service Award (2005); Funai Achievement Award (2007); IEEE Internet Award (2011); Okawa Prize (2011).
