Educated and trained as a geographer and landscape ecologist at the Univ. of Tokyo. Currently: Vice-Rector, United Nations Univ.; Director, United Nations Univ. Institute for Sustainability and Peace; Director and Professor, Integrated Research System for Sustainability Science, Univ. of Tokyo. Has served as Member, Central Environment Council; Member, Food, Agriculture and Rural Area Policies Council, Gov't of Japan; Editor-in-Chief, Sustainability Science. Engages in research and education on creating eco-friendly environments for harmonious coexistence of people and nature. Leads Satoyama Initiative and climate/ecosystem change research in Asia and Africa.
