Degree (Hons) in Chemical Engineering, National Technical University of Athens. 1970-74, played a leading role in the underground student opposition to the dictatorship in Greece; imprisoned by the regime after the student uprising of November 1973 and until the fall of the dictatorship in 1974. More than 25 years as a Member of the National Parliament, including: 1986-90, Vice-President of the Greek Parliament; 1991-93, Leader of the Coalition of Left and Progress political party. 1994-2000, Member, City Council, Athens. Currently, European Commissioner for Maritime Affairs and Fisheries. Author of four books on European issues, human rights and education.
