Former lawyer, Sonnenschein, Nath & Rosenthal, Chicago. 1978-2009, led Human Rights First, a New York-based human rights advocacy organization. 2009-13, in the Obama Administration as Assistant Secretary of State, Bureau of Democracy, Human Rights and Labor, State Department. Played a major role in shaping US policy on issues ranging from refugee and asylum law and policy, national security and human rights, Internet freedom, and business and human rights. Currently, Professor of Business and Society, NYU's Stern School of Business; working to launch the first-ever centre on business and human rights at a business school. Active in several leading organizations in the field of business and human rights, including the Fair Labor Association, the Global Network Initiative, and the Voluntary Principles on Security and Human Rights. 1981-84 and 2009, lectured at Yale Law School. 1984-2008, visiting lecturer, Columbia University Law School. Member, California Bar and Illinois Bar.
