Following research, became Physical Sciences Editor, Nature and, 1988, Founding Editor, Physics World, the international magazine of the UK Institute of Physics. 1995, returned to Nature; since then, Editor-in-Chief, Nature and Nature Publishing Group. Areas of responsibility include the editorial content and management of Nature, and assuring the long-term quality of all Nature publications. Has worked with the UK government, the European Commission and the US National Institutes of Health on issues relating to science and its impacts in society. For ten years until 2012, Trustee, Cancer Research UK. Founding Trustee, research funding charity MQ: transforming mental health. Elected Fellow, Royal Astronomical Society. Fellow, Institute of Physics. Honorary degrees from several universities. Honorary professorship, Peking Union Medical College. Life Member, Clare Hall, Cambridge University.
