Ambassador Ramtane Lamamra is Commissioner for Peace and Security of the African Union. Previously he served as Secretary General of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, Algiers (20052007) and as Ambassador Extraordinary and Plenipotentiary of Algeria to the Portuguese Republic (20042005). He also served as Ambassador Counsellor, Ministry of Foreign Affairs (20012003), as Ambassador to the United States of America (19961999), Ambassador and Permanent Representative of Algeria to the United Nations in New York (19931996), Ambassador to the Republic of Austria, and Permanent Representative to the United Nations Office, the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) and the United Nations Industrial Development Organisation (UNIDO) in Vienna (19921993). From 1989 to 1991 he was Ambassador to Ethiopia and to Djibouti, and Permanent Representative of Algeria to the Organisation of African Unity (OAU) and to the UN Economic Commission for Africa (ECA).
