Trained as Marine Ecologist. Formerly: Director and Chief Executive Officer, Australian Institute of Marine Science; Professor of Marine Biology, Flinders University, South Australia; Head of Fish Biology, Marine Laboratory, Scottish Office Agriculture, Environment and Fisheries Department, Aberdeen; 2000, Pew Fellowship in Marine Conservation. Former member, numerous national and international committees. Author on structure and functioning of marine ecological systems, particularly effects of natural and human disturbance. Recipient of Australian Public Service Medal (2004).
