Began political career as White House Fellow under President Lyndon Johnson and was Deputy Assistant Secretary for Education, Nixon Administration; 1975-87, represented Colorado's 2nd Congressional District, US House of Representatives; 1987, elected to the US Senate, focussing on environmental issues, especially global climate change and population stabilization; 1993-97, served as First Undersecretary for Global Affairs, US Department of State; since 1998, President, United Nations Foundation. Member, Harvard Board of Overseers. Recipient of awards and honorary degrees.
