MS, University of Virginia; Degree from Tokyo University. 1957, joined United Nations Secretariat, serving as Under-Secretary-General for Public Information, Disarmament Affairs, and Humanitarian Affairs consecutively, and as Special Representative of the Secretary-General for Cambodia and the former Yugoslavia. Former UN Undersecretary-General for Humanitarian Affairs and Emergency Relief. Career Ambassador, Ministry of Foreign Affairs of Japan. Currently serves as Representative of the Japanese Government on Peace-Building in Sri Lanka and the Chairman of the International House of Japan.
