The World Economic Forum and The Boston Consulting Group have developed scenarios that provide an industry perspective on how the travel and transportation ecosystem can transform to meet changing customer needs as well as new mobility frontiers and technological developments by 2025 and beyond.
View videos of four game-changing solutions that will revolutionize travel and transportation by 2025:
IPITA: Integrated proactive intermodal travel assistant
COMET: Condition based megacity traffic management
ACIS: Fully automated check-in, security and border control
TATLO: Tracking- and transparency- based logistics optimizer
The lack of cross-industry cooperation, conflicting policies and missing standards and the inherent risks of hyperconnectivity are the main barriers for seamless travel and transport. Yet, these barriers can be overcome:
- Technology is not the hindrance; many technologies needed for the four future solutions are available today
- Cross-industry cooperation and dialogue with policy-makers are needed to define legal frameworks, reach international standards and set up public-private partnerships
- Successful players need to take advantage of new opportunities associated with hyperconnectivity, such as big data analytics, while managing risks through data privacy rules and cyber security measures

The Issue
Hyperconnectivity is dramatically changing the world around us and the way that business is done. It is simultaneously disrupting incumbent institutions while creating new opportunities. Understanding how best to coordinate and manage a transformation to future dynamic systems in this complex world has become an increasing priority for all. In this context, the World Economic Forum has launched a new initiative on Hyperconnectivity. Exploring the linkages between such issues as security, cybercrime, privacy, the flow of personal data, individual rights, access to information and smart and seamless travel and transportation, this work establishes a holistic means for understanding the systemic nature of change in a hyperconnected world.
Exclusive Insight
Connected World: Transforming Travel, Transportation and Supply Chains is one project of the Hyperconnectivity initiative which we conduct in collaboration with The Boston Consulting Group. It developed scenarios to provide an industry perspective on how the travel and transportation ecosystem may transform under the influence of changes in the macro-environment and changing customer needs, new mobility frontiers and technological developments by 2025 and beyond. It also looks at the implications for industry players and policy-makers.
Core questions that are addressed:
- How can information, infrastructure and business models transform to enable seamless mobility for customers and goods?
- Which new models, alliances or systems could emerge in this transformation?
Community

- Assessment of megatrends impacting the future mobility ecosystem
- Scenarios on how travel, transportation, logistics and supply chains may transform by 2025 and beyond
- Implications of these scenarios for the industry stakeholder groups involved (aviation, automotive, rail, logistics, public transport, hospitality, IT & telecom) and policymakers
- Recommendations on how to leverage future opportunities and business models to establish a future mobility ecosystem which provides a high degree of efficiency, convenience and sustainability
- Four key cross-industry solution spaces
IPITA: Integrated proactive intermodal travel assistant
COMET: Condition based megacity traffic management
ACIS: Fully automated check-in, security and border control
TATLO: Tracking- and transparency- based logistics optimizer
- Multistakeholder platform including leading travel and transportation industries and IT & telecom players to discuss new ideas and areas of potential cooperation
Objectives 2013
The project will now focus on defining a mid- to long-term roadmap and reference model for each of the key solution ideas. This work will include an evaluation of business/operating models and partnership types as well as a quantification of benefits/investments for the involved stakeholders.
Furthermore a regional dialogue with policymakers will be established through a number of workshops. These serve to investigate and recommend how to overcome realization challenges in each of the regions including Europe, USA, Asia and Latin America.
