Bangkok, Thailand, 30 May 2012 – Professor Klaus Schwab, Founder and Executive Chairman of the World Economic Forum, was today conferred a doctorate honoris causa in Business Administration by Chulalongkorn University, Thailand’s oldest university and one of the most respected in East Asia, in recognition of his outstanding contribution to Southeast Asia’s business community and long-standing commitment to its integration into the global economy.

Professor Schwab received the distinction from the Chairperson of Chulalongkorn University Council, Professor Khunying Suchada Kiranandana, at an award ceremony in Bangkok on the eve of the opening of the World Economic Forum on East Asia, which is being held for the first time in Bangkok on 30 May – 1 June.

In his address speech, Professor Schwab recalled the importance of education to successful leadership in an era of profound and unprecedented change. “The context for decision-making has radically evolved. Our lives are being transformed by seismic and interrelated shifts in fields as diverse as economics, the environment, geopolitics, society and technology, and it is essential that universities offer a holistic approach to education that embraces many different academic disciplines,” explained Professor Schwab.

“Today’s decision-makers are faced with situations of unparalleled volatility and vulnerability which often present them with new and daunting challenges. In order to respond, they must be highly connected, open to new ideas, self-confident and modest. Resolution of the challenges they face can only come through proper understanding, and education is a prerequisite for this,” he continued.
