Geneva, Switzerland, 31 May 2011 – The 2011 India Economic Summit will be held in Mumbai for the first time in the 26 year history of the Summit. In partnership with the Confederation of Indian Industry (CII) and with the support of the Government of India, this year’s summit will take place on 12-14 November 2011 in Mumbai. The Summit will return to New Delhi in 2012 and 2014 in time for India's next national election.
The decision to host the summit in Mumbai is to reinvigorate the Forum’s partnership in India and to align its strategy with the evolving global context as well as the development priorities for India and South Asia. Under the theme Linking Leadership and Livelihood, leaders from government, industry, civil society and media will seek ways to collaborate to improve the education system, invest in much-needed infrastructure, increase agricultural productivity and ensure an equitable distribution of opportunities. The 2010 India Economic Summit held in New Delhi last November successfully gathered 800 participants from over 45 countries under the theme “Implementing India”.
"The State of Maharashtra looks forward to hosting the 2011 India Economic Summit and to welcoming business, government and civil society leaders from around the world to India's financial and commercial capital," said Prithiviraj Chavan, Chief Minister of Maharashtra, India
“Coming to Mumbai is a reflection of the Forum's intent to show not only what the national government and central policies mean for regional growth but to also demonstrate how different regions of India contribute to the success of the national agenda,” explained Sushant Palakurthi Rao, Director, Head of Asia, World Economic Forum.
“Our two organizations – CII and the Forum started a journey together over 26 years ago. This partnership based on trust, confidence, teamwork and friendships has helped to promote, position and project India globally,” remarked Chandrajit Banerjee, Director-General, Confederation of Indian Industry, India
Media accreditation for this event will open in August 2011 at www.weforummedia.org.
