The World Economic Forum in Turkey was especially well timed, coming a year after Turkey began negotiations for membership in the European Union and on the eve of Pope Benedict XVI’s landmark visit to Turkey and the crucial EU Summit in Brussels at which leaders were to assess the status of the accession talks.
