East Asia 2008 - Fears over Food and Fuel

Food and fuel prices have reached historic highs across Asia - the price of rice, the staple food of 2.5 billion people in Asia, has more than tripled in Thailand since January, while diesel has risen over 36% in Vietnam. Given the region's dual dependencies on food subsidies and energy imports, how can Asian economies address the inflation challenge to ensure continued sustainable growth and avoid a domestic backlash?
