Edge of Arabia
Ahmed Mater is considered one of the most significant artists in the Saudi contemporary art world. In addition, he works in a hospital in Abha, the captial of Aseer province of Saudi Arabia, as a fully qualified medical doctor. He graduated from King Khlaed University, as a medical student. In 2005 he worked at the emergency room of Aseer central hospital and throughout his medical training he held several exhibitions of his artwork. In 2006 he received a Bachelor of Medicine and a Bachelor of Surgery as currently serves as a resident doctor at Aseer central hospital. In 2007 Ahmed is invited by the US state department to take part in the international visitor leadership program in Washington, D.C. His works of art are one of only two of Saudi Arabia that are included in the British Museum's "word into Art" exhibition for the Sharjah Biennial 2007. In 2012 his work was featured in the Sunday Times, the BBC and the Guardian.In addittion he is afounder of "Edge of Arabia", an independent arts initiative that nurtures a network of artists in Saudi Arabia through exhibitions and educational programs. His work, which encompasses photography, calligraphy, painting, installation and video, explores the narratives and aesthetics of Islamic culture in an era of globalisation, consumerism and dramatic flux. A monograph on Ahmed Mater’s life and work was published internationally by Booth-Clibborn Editions in 2010. He has been a keynote speaker at several events all around the world. His collections are featured in the British Museum, Los Angeles County Museum of Art, Abu Dhabi Authority for Culture & Heritage, The Jameel Collection, GreenBox Museum Amsterdam, Royal Embassy of Saudi Arabia London, The Barjeel Art Foundation Sharjah.
