Vindhya, a socio-economic venture started by Ashok Giri Durgesh, is India's and probably the world's first and only for-profit organization that employs people with disabilities (PWDs) as 100% of its production staff. Its production staff comprises physically challenged, hearing impaired and borderline autistic individuals. Started in 2006, the company has grown from five to 200 PWDs. Durgesh's vision is to employ 5,000 by 2015. Through Vindhya, Durgesh is the recipient of the Shell-Helen Keller Award from the National Center for Promotion of Employment Opportunity for Disabled People, a Government of India body, and Outstanding Employer from then-Finance Minister Chidambaram on behalf of Canara Bank, one of the largest national banks in India. Prior to Vindhya, Durgesh held director-level positions at R2K, Network Solutions (an IBM company) and Trivium, and was responsible for their operations in the Asia region. Durgesh graduated in Science from Bangalore University.
