Birgitta Ohlsson is the Minister for European Union Affairs of Sweden and also responsible for democracy and consumer issues. After finishing her university studies in political science, she began her career as a journalist, writing editorials with a special focus on foreign relations, gender equality and human rights. Her career in national politics started in 1999, when, at the age of 24, was elected as the President for Liberal Youth of Sweden. Three years later she ran for the Swedish Parliament and was elected with strong support from her constituency in Stockholm. During her eight years in Parliament, Ohlsson served in the Committee on Foreign Affairs. She has been an active board member on a variety of development and democracy-oriented organizations, including the Swedish International Development Cooperation Agency and Swedish International Liberal Centre. She also serves as Chair of the Federation of Liberal Women in Sweden.
