Photographer; began career photographing apartheid issues; specializes in documentary work; known for his alternative approaches to photojournalism, including lighting portraiture in the field; travels average of ten months a year, working exclusively on commissioned assignment; work has appeared in Newsweek, National Geographic, CNN, New York Times Magazine, Washington Post Magazine, London Sunday Times magazine, Le Express, Le Monde 2, GQ, Geo, Sterns; creates multimedia features and writes blog for the Discovery Channel; works extensively on humanitarian issues including HIV/AIDS, environment, poverty, food insecurity, conflict and post-conflict recovery and women’s empowerment issues. Recipient of numerous awards including: five awards each from World Press Photo Foundation and Lucie Foundation International Photography Awards; Visa Pour L'Image; Overseas Press Club; American Photo and UN; and the United Nations; cited as Hero of Photography, PopPhoto Magazine (2007).
