Christopher Alexander was named Deputy Special Representative of the Secretary-General for UNAMA, the UN special political mission in Afghanistan, in December 2005. He served as Canada's Ambassador to Afghanistan from 2003-2005 and was previously Minister Counsellor at the Canadian Embassy in Moscow. He began his diplomatic career as Second Secretary in the same mission in the mid-1990s. He also held several positions at Foreign Affairs headquarters in Ottawa, including Deputy Director responsible for bilateral relations with Russia and Assistant to the Deputy Minister of Foreign Affairs. He received an MA from the University of Oxford and a BA from McGill University.
