Member of Parliament
Fawzia Koofi is a Member of Parliament of Afghanistan. Formerly, she was Deputy Speaker of the Lower House of the Afghanistan National Assembly, the first Afghan woman elected to this position. She is also the chairperson of women, human rights and civil society committees in the Afghan Parliament. As a strong supporter of human rights, Koofi focuses on women issues at the numerous national and international conferences that she participates in. In January 2006, she travelled to America and meet with US First Lady Laura Bush and Secretary of State Condoleezza Rice. Koofi is the author of ?Letters to My Daughters? and the autobiographical ?The Favored Daughter: One Woman's Fight to Lead Afghanistan into the Future?. Prior to being elected to parliament, Koofi was a Child Protection Officer for UNICEF. She has a degree in Law and Political Science from Kabul University, and received an MA in Business and Management.
