Director, Moral Courage Project
New York University
Irshad Manji is Professor of Public Leadership at New York University and Director of the Moral Courage Project at NYU'S School of Public Service. The Moral Courage Project mentors leaders who will speak truth to power within their own communities for the sake of a greater good. It stems from Manji's award-winning work to promote Muslim reform. She is author of The Trouble with Islam Today: A Muslim's Call for Reform in Her Faith. The book has been published in more than 30 countries, including Pakistan, India, Lebanon and Indonesia. In Muslim states that have banned her best-seller, she is reaching readers by posting free translations on her website. The Arabic, Urdu and Farsi editions have collectively been downloaded over 2 million times. Manji is also creator of the Emmy-nominated film, Faith without Fear, which chronicles her personal journey to reconcile Islam with human rights. Through her books, films and blogs, Manji has founded a global campaign to renew “ijtihad”, Islam's tradition of debate and dissent.
