After two years working with Sarah Brown, wife of former British Prime Minister Gordon Brown, to direct a global campaign to stop mothers dying needlessly in childbirth, Jo Cox is now Director of Strategy at the White Ribbon Alliance for Safe Motherhood. She previously worked in a variety of roles at Oxfam, the international development and humanitarian agency, including Head of Policy and Advocacy for Oxfam UK, Head of Oxfam's European Office in Brussels and Head of Oxfam's Global Humanitarian Campaigning based in New York. Before joining Oxfam, she spent six years working in politics and political campaigning in the United Kingdom and Europe. Cox is on the Board of the Burma Campaign and is National Chair of Labour Women's Network, a voluntary network committed to supporting women entering politics. She was educated at Cambridge University.
