José Ignacio Peralta has been Undersecretary of Communications of Mexico since December 2012, in charge of the country's telecommunications policy. From 2009 to 2012, he served as Mayor of the City Council of Colima, a municipality covering 680 square kilometres with a population of 150,000 citizens, and from 2004 to 2009, he was Secretary of Economic Development of Colima, responsible for multi-sector economic policy to enhance the development and growth of the state's economy. Peralta worked at the Central Bank of Mexico from 1994 to 2003 in areas related to monetary and foreign exchange rate policy and international reserves management. In 1993, he served on the staff of economic advisers to the Federal Government's Undersecretary of Public Education and, earlier, spent two years as an economic research analyst on several projects. Peralta has been a professor of economics at several universities in Mexico. He holds a BA in Economics from ITAM and an MA in Economics from the University of Essex in the United Kingdom.
