    Venezuelan National Assembly

Maria Corina Machado is a Member of Parliament in Venezuela, representing the state of Miranda. She won the seat in 2010 by a historically large voting margin. Machado currently leads the Independent Parliamentary Faction and sits on the Interior Policy Committee. After being the only independent presidential candidate in Venezuela running in the opposition primaries in February 2012, she is now a national coordinator for the opposition's presidential campaign, Comando Venezuela, leading and organizing efforts that focus on independent voters and civil society supporters of the Unity platform. Previously, Machado was Co-Founder and Chairwoman of SUMATE, Venezuela's leading watchdog for electoral transparency and promoter of civil and political rights. Under her guidance, SUMATE's network of volunteers grew to include more than 30,000 members from all over Venezuela. In 2004, SUMATE successfully organized national petition-signing drives that reached more than a quarter of all registered voters in the country. Machado has a BSc in Industrial Engineering and a post-graduate degree in Finance. She is a 2009 Yale World Fellow.
