Master's in Social Work, University of Delhi. Has acted in over 30 feature films in 10 different languages. Directorial debut feature film, Firaaq, premiered at the Toronto Film Festival in 2008 and has travelled to over 50 festivals, winning over 20 awards. Member of various juries including Cannes Film Festival (2005 and 2013). Has worked with various NGOs. Advocate on social justice, especially for women, children and marginalised communities. Former Chairperson, Children's Film Society, India. Featured speaker at many reputed universities and social forums, in India and abroad. Writer of monthly column, The Week magazine. Has written, directed and acted in the play Between the Lines, which deals with gender inequalities. Recipient: Knight of the Order of Arts and Letters (Chevalier dans l'Ordre des Arts et des Lettres), France; first Indian to be inducted into the Hall of Fame of the International Women's Forum (2011).
