Actress, Director and Activist
Nandita Das is an actor, director, social activist and theatre artist. She has acted in over 30 feature films in 10 different languages. Firaaq, her first directorial venture, has won awards throughout India and internationally. She has also been on the jury of the Cannes Film Festival (2005 and 2013) and served as Chairperson of the Children's Film Society of India. Das has written, directed and acted in the play, Between the Lines, which deals with gender inequalities. The play garnered praise from critics and audiences, and has been performed in many cities across India. The French government conferred Das with the Knight of the Order of Arts and Letters (Chevalier dans l'Ordre des Arts et des Lettres), one of the country's highest civilian awards. In 2011, she was the first Indian to be inducted into the Hall of Fame of the International Women's Forum.
