Orzala Ashraf Nemat

Orzala Ashraf Nemat is an emerging Afghan scholar and a prominent civil society activist working to empower local communities to find peaceful solutions to conflict. In 2010, she founded the Youth & Women's Leadership Centre. Previously, as the founder and chair of a leading Afghan NGO, Humanitarian Assistance to the Women and Children of Afghanistan, Ashraf Nemat devoted 12 years to establishing and delivering training programmes to Afghan women and children in refugee communities in Pakistan and Afghanistan. Under the Taliban regime, she launched underground literacy and health education programmes for women and girls. Ashraf Nemat is currently conducting research for her doctoral thesis on local governance and how interventions change and influence local power dynamics in the Afghan case. She serves on the boards of various charities, women's and human rights organizations, and networks in Afghanistan. Ashraf Nemat was recently appointed as Trustee of Afghan Aid, which is a well-known British-based Afghan charity with 30 years of work experience in Afghanistan.
