Shamil Idriss is Deputy Director of the Alliance of Civilizations, an initiative launched by the UN Secretary-General in 2005 with the co-sponsorship of the Turkish and Spanish governments. The mandate of the Alliance is to generate an action plan with the goal of improving Islamic-Western relations. The plan was presented to the Secretary-General by a high-level group of senior leaders in 2006, establishing the basis for implementation immediately thereafter. Previously, Idriss served as Chief Operating Officer of Search for Common Ground, a global leader in international conflict resolution and pioneer in the use of media for positive social change. As Chief Operating Officer, he managed the organization's global programming and headquarters in Washington DC. Idriss serves on the core group of the Council of 100 Leaders' West-Islamic World Dialogue Initiative and on the boards of several non-profit organizations. He has published articles on international conflict resolution, media and social change, and Islamic-Western relations in German, South African, Middle Eastern and American journals and newspapers.
