Steven Sim is the Senior Executive Officer of the Penang Institute, a public policy think-tank based in Penang, Malaysia. He has served in numerous policy advisory roles at the local, state and federal government level in Malaysia, and is an active participant of regional dialogues in Asia and South-East Asia. Since January 2011, he has served as City Councillor of the Province Wellesley Municipal Council, one of the largest municipalities in Malaysia. His areas of interest include sustainable urban development, gender and social justice, and participatory politics. Sim is the convener of #BetterPenang, a city-based project to promote local democracy and urban rejuvenation. He is also a keen participant of civilizational dialogues, especially with the Muslim world. Sim writes regularly for Penang Monthly and contributes opinion pieces to prominent Malaysian online news portals such as Malaysiakini and the Malaysian Insider. He is also the author of The Audacity to Think: An Invitation to Rethink Politics.
