Clinician scientist. Formerly: 18 years as Director, Oxford University Clinical Research Unit, Viet Nam, where research interests were in infectious diseases and global health with a focus on emerging infections. Currently, Director, Wellcome Trust, a global charitable foundation dedicated to improving human health. Has served as chair on several advisory boards for governments and global organizations, including the World Health Organization Fellow: Academy of Medical Sciences UK; National Academies USA; The Royal Society. Has published almost 600 peer-reviewed scientific papers, mentored many dozens of students and fellows. Named 12th in the Fortune list of 50 World’s Greatest Leaders (2015); OBE (2005); Memorial Medal and Ho Chi Minh City Medal, Government of Viet Nam; honoured by the Royal College Physicians UK and the American Society for Tropical Medicine and Hygiene; President Jimmy and Rosalynn Carter Humanitarian Award (2018).
