What if we could transform the way in which we live, work and play through secure, integrated tech devices that are safe and sustainable?This community is a high-level group of peers dedicated to ensuring the long-term sustainability of their industry and society.  Industry agendaThe Electronics Industry Governors define the industry agenda. The group, comprising chief executives and chairs from partner organizations, closely align the agenda with related System Initiatives. The governors have identified the following priorities:


  1. Helping other industries and sectors recognize the potential of, and simplifying the adoption of, emerging technologies such as virtual reality (VR) and internet of things (IoT)

  2. Driving alignment across connected devices

  3. Proactively shaping future value chains by embedding security and sustainability into design


A number of Forum projects and activities work towards this agenda:1. Aligning the IoT ecosystemThe Aligning the IoT Ecosystem project, which forms part of the System Initiative on Shaping the Future of Digital Economy and Society, aims to facilitate responsible IoT adoption. Deliverables include:


  • A discussion paper co-authored by Massachusetts Institute of Technology that maps out five primary components for a healthy IoT ecosystem. It also provides recommendations for how to achieve this, referencing cases and best practice. This paper will offer the basis for the Electronics Governors Meeting at the Annual Meeting 2018, and serve as a foundation for setting the community’s IoT agenda for 2018-2019.

  • A set of guidelines for sustainable IoT adoption designed for practitioners working across private, public and non-profit sectors. The guidelines aim to maximize the social and commercial benefits of IoT deployments, and will serve as a basis for discussion at the Annual Meeting 2018


2. Supply chain responsibilityThe Platform for Accelerating the Circular Economy forms part of the System Initiative on Shaping the Future of Environment and Natural Resource Security. This project aims to advance global efforts to unlock the trillion-dollar potential of the circular economy. It does this by facilitating a public-private platform co-chaired by the chief executive officer of Royal Philips and the heads of the UN Environment and the Global Environment Facility. In terms of the Electronics Industry, the project has two ongoing workstreams:


  • The China Electronics Coalition for Circular Economy focuses on public-private partnerships that support greater materials recovery and movement of post-consumer materials across borders

  • The Africa Alliance on E-waste involves electronics companies that are helping develop a functioning e-waste system in pilot countries, with initial focus on Nigeria and Rwanda. The Global Environment Facility has provided the first $1 million to support this effort


The Global Battery Alliance aims to achieve the inclusive, innovative and sustainable battery supply chain needed to power the Fourth Industrial Revolution. It will do this by forming a public-private coalition, which will scale and accelerate existing efforts to achieve sustainable batteries, and develop policy recommendations. 3. Shaping the future of virtual realityThe VR/AR for Impact project, which is still in the scoping stage, will aim to help developers, content creators and change-makers inside and outside the virtual reality (VR) ecosystem harness the technology for positive social and environmental impact. The project will partner with leading VR companies, civil society and academia to amplify existing efforts and innovate in the areas of health, education and environmental awareness. This project will build on work launched by HTC, which has committed $10 million to support this project. 4. CybersecurityThe Cybercrime project, which forms part of the System Initiative on Shaping the Future of Digital Economy and Society, aims to produce a better assessment of the cybercrime threat than is currently available. It will achieve this by fostering structured dialogue on information sharing, enhancing cooperation between law enforcement authorities, and developing tools and techniques to assess risk.  The Cyber Resilience project, which forms part of the System Initiative on Shaping the Future of Digital Economy and Society, aims to improve systemic cybersecurity and resilience by helping governments and businesses improve their internal governance. It will achieve this by:


  • Examining crosscutting leadership, governance, regulatory and liability challenges relating to networked technology risks

  • Creating partnerships, principles, frameworks and tools to meet these challenges and foster public-private and cross-sector cooperation


The Digital Identity project, which forms part of the System Initiative on Shaping the Future of Digital Economy and Society, aims to develop a digital identity system that supports the movement of people, goods, funds and data by authenticating people, devices and other entities. It will achieve this by convening public and private-sector stakeholders to identify the common requirements, principles, mechanisms and governance regimes needed to support universal digital identity programmes. Two other projects of particular relevance to the Electronics industry are: The Future of Urban and Autonomous Mobility project, which forms part of the System Initiative on Shaping the Future of Mobility, aims to bring together city and business leaders to accelerate the implementation of autonomous and shared-vehicle fleets to address urban mobility challenges. It will achieve this by:


  • Partnering with the City of Boston to drive impact and implementation

  • Quantifying autonomous-vehicle impact on Boston traffic flows and transport options by means of primary consumer research and traffic simulation

  • Identifying urban logistical challenges and innovative business solutions

  • Facilitating best-practice exchange in cities and ventures around the world


The Technology and Innovation for the Future of Production project forms part of the System Initiative on Shaping the Future of Production. It seeks to provide a unique space for best-practice sharing, decision-making and partnership to accelerate the incubation, testing and adoption of new technologies in production at scale. Activities include:


  • Developing a strategic approach to capture Industry 4.0 value-at-stake

  • Identifying proven use cases that transform the production value chain

  • Creating country and sector profiles that map use cases to external factors

  • Demonstrating value capture through pilots and scaling
