Speaking in 2013, the executive secretary of the United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change referred to 2014 as the year where every government, organization, business and individual needs to ask themselves, “How am I going to contribute to solving climate change?”
The Global Agenda Council on Climate Change is developing innovative ways to get more and more people involved in climate change mitigation to ensure that 2014 really is the year where everyone plays their part in reducing greenhouse gas emissions.
The stakes could not be higher. The Emissions Gap Report, published by the United Nations Environment Programme, shows that even if nations meet their current climate pledges, greenhouse gas emissions in 2020 are likely to be 8 to 12 gigatons of CO2 equivalent above the level needed to remain below temperature increases of 2°C. Unless more is done, extreme weather and climate events are likely to be stronger and more frequent, sea levels will change as a result of warming and the melting of land ice, and ocean acidification will continue.
