Research aims at developing personalized computational models of the human respiratory system, with the goal of creating novel tools for the early detection of chronic diseases and acute medical conditions. Approach is highly interdisciplinary, as combines advanced mathematical modelling, high-performance computing, and theoretical and experimental biomechanics to understand the genesis and progression of respiratory diseases. One application is the prevention of ventilator-induced lung injury, an acute condition that increases the mortality in intensive care units. By combining medical imaging and biomechanical modelling, team is creating a computer-guided tool for the personalization of mechanical-ventilation therapies that provide optimal vital support for the patient without risking the lung integrity. It also exploits personalized computational models to design and create medical devices. Using this approach, it has developed a wearable sensor that continuously monitors the patient's breathing, providing an early-alert for life-threatening respiratory complications. This project led to the creation of a medtech start-up company, co-founder and scientist.

I am the Senior VP of Clinical Innovation at COMPASS Pathways, a mental health company dedicated to accelerating patient access to evidence-based innovation in mental health. Dr. Megan J. Palmer is Senior Director of Public Impact at Ginkgo Bioworks where she leads efforts to ensure that biological engineering is developed with care. She is also an adjunct professor of Bioengineering at Stanford University where she previously served as the Executive Director of Bio Policy & Leadership Initiatives, leading programs to explore how biological science and engineering is shaping our societies, and to guide innovation to serve public interests.

Noura Berrouba is a Swedish civil society leader working on revitalizing democracy by creating ecosystems for people and civil society organisations to strengthen representation and systems of governance to tackle society’s big challenges with a broader set of voices and perspectives.
